Assassinated Mexican Mayor Was Under Investigation for Organized Crime Ties

Mexico's Security and Citizen Protection Secretary, Omar García Harfuch, announced that the mayor of Temoac, Morelos, Valentín Lavín Romero, who was assassinated last Wednesday, was under investigation for suspected links to criminal organizations. García Harfuch stated that the municipal president was being investigated for possible connections to groups such as the Aparicio and Huazulco families, which are implicated in high-impact crimes including kidnapping, extortion, drug trafficking, and homicide across the eastern region of Morelos. During a federal government press conference, the official extended condolences for the crime and detailed that the state prosecutor's office was examining the mayor's potential relationship with detained relatives who are allegedly involved with these criminal structures. Specifically, the investigation is looking into the arrest of Lavín Romero's mother-in-law, Andrea N., known as 'La Patrona,' who previously served as municipal treasurer and was identified by the prosecutor's office as a probable operator for one of these criminal groups. Her second arrest occurred in September 2025, and she is considered by the prosecutor's office to be one of the operational leaders of the criminal organization. The rivalry between this organization and other criminal factions is considered one of the primary lines of investigation into the mayor's homicide. Additionally, the mayor had faced previous accusations, including a request in March from the Front of Peoples in Defense of the Land and Water of Morelos, Puebla, and Tlaxcala to investigate his alleged intellectual responsibility in the murder of two individuals. Another investigation concerned his alleged connection to the homicide of another politician last year, who reportedly received threats from members of the mayor's family. García Harfuch noted that the Security Cabinet received new complaints related to the mayor in May, and recalled that he was the victim of an initial armed attack on January 31, followed by other violent incidents against him and his family. Consequently, the main hypothesis of the authorities points to a dispute between rival criminal groups.
