Astros Designate Korean-American Utility Player Shay Whitcomb for Assignment

The Houston Astros have designated utility player Shay Whitcomb for assignment, clearing a roster spot for newly acquired outfielder Nelson Velázquez. Whitcomb, 27, was picked by the Astros in the fifth round of the 2020 MLB draft and made his major league debut in 2024.

Whitcomb had shown promise in the minor leagues, hitting 25 home runs in both the 2023 and 2024 seasons at the Triple-A level, with a .293/.378/.530 slash line in 2024. However, his performance in the majors has been limited. Over three seasons, he appeared in 57 games, accumulating three home runs and 11 RBIs, with a career batting average of .167 and an OPS of .508.

Despite a less productive season in Triple-A this year, with nine home runs and a .274 batting average, Whitcomb's versatility in the field and his ability to steal bases, averaging 20-30 stolen bases in the minors and 23 this season, could still attract interest from other teams. His designation for assignment came after he was optioned to Triple-A on July 11.

Whitcomb also represented South Korea in the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In a pivotal moment during the tournament, he made a fielding error on a ground ball in the 10th inning of a game against Taiwan. This miscue allowed Taiwan to score the go-ahead run, ultimately proving to be the game-winning play.
