At a school for students with disabilities, the first day builds confidence and inclusion

For parents of children with disabilities, the joy of a new school year is simple: their children can keep going to school, learn to communicate and take gradual steps toward independence.

The Ho Chi Minh City Center for Support, Vocational Training and Employment, which operates under the city’s Youth Volunteer Force, held its opening ceremony for the 2026-27 school year on Sept. 5. Students returned for lessons and training, with 450 students attending the ceremony.

Hồ Tuấn Nghĩa said his family has found joy in every opening ceremony because his son, H.C.T.P, has been able to continue his education. The boy has Down syndrome and is entering seventh grade after more than 10 years at the center.

Mr. Nghĩa said the school offers more than academic instruction. Students communicate, make friends and gradually become more confident. Although they may absorb lessons slowly, he said, teachers remain patient and help them make progress. “The teachers have enthusiastically taught our children and helped them achieve what they have today,” he said, thanking the teachers, center leadership and donors.

Nguyễn Loan, whose daughter is entering sixth grade, praised the center’s scheduled academic classes and permanent teaching staff. Games and social activities supported by donors give students further chances to meet and learn from others.

At the ceremony, Đỗ Hữu Chính said each student has different circumstances, abilities and support needs. “For students with disabilities, educational results are shown not only in grades, but also in each skill they gain, the confidence they develop and the progress they make for themselves,” he said. He also acknowledged that the center still faces staff shortages and continues to repair and upgrade its facilities.
