At least 53 dead, 79 rescued in Guyana shipwreck with 179 aboard

Guyana's President Irfaan Ali declared that his primary focus is providing "comfort" to the families and friends of those lost in the MV Barima shipwreck. The vessel, carrying 179 passengers, capsized, resulting in 53 confirmed fatalities and 79 individuals rescued so far. The president expressed his solidarity with survivors and families awaiting news of the missing.

Of the 53 bodies recovered, 26 have been identified. President Ali conveyed gratitude for the international support and solidarity shown to Guyana during this difficult time. The number of people on board the ferry was revised upwards to 179 after reviewing boarding footage, according to Prime Minister Mark Phillips.

During the past two days, I have remained alongside the survivors and the families who have lost loved ones or who continue to await news of those still missing. In these moments of unimaginable pain, my priority is to offer them comfort, support, and the assurance that they are not alone.

In the wake of the tragedy, the Association of Amerindian Peoples and the political opposition have demanded the resignation of the Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill. Edghill had previously stated that the ferry departed around 3:15 PM local time on Saturday and issued a distress call around 11:01 PM, triggering an immediate emergency response. He also asserted that the MV Barima was equipped with 250 life jackets and six inflatable life rafts, meeting safety requirements for the approximately 16-hour journey, which is a common and economical transport option in Guyana.
