At Least Four Dead and Over 25 Injured in Traffic Accident in Northern Honduras

At least four people, including a five-year-old girl, died and more than 25 were injured when a passenger bus and a pickup truck collided in northern Honduras on Sunday. The accident occurred in an area of the municipality of Morazán, within the Yoro department.

According to Major Sergio Madrid of the Honduran Fire Department, the passenger bus overturned after colliding with the pickup truck. The deceased were identified as Santos Luciano Rivera, 45; Delmis Suyapa Ramos, 28, and her 5-year-old daughter; and José Manuel Hernández, whose age was not specified. All victims resided in the municipality of Sulaco, also in the Yoro department.

Most of the injured were transported to the local state hospital. The severity of their conditions remains unknown at this time. Emergency services, including the Fire Department, responded to the scene to assist the victims.

This tragic incident highlights the persistent problem of traffic accidents in Honduras. Official data indicates that traffic accidents are the second leading cause of violent death in the country, surpassed only by homicides. So far in 2026, authorities have recorded over 900 fatalities resulting from traffic accidents. Common contributing factors include excessive speed, driving under the influence of alcohol, mechanical failures, and general driver imprudence.
