At Least Nine Dead in Thai School Shooting; Gunman Also Dead

A wave of violence struck a prestigious school on the outskirts of Bangkok on Friday when a high school student opened fire, killing at least nine people. The attack began before the student entered the Debsirin Nonthaburi school, as he first killed his grandparents.

Local time, shortly before 10 a.m., a student alerted authorities to the ongoing shooting at the well-regarded boys' school. The perpetrator, a student in the final year of junior high, reportedly fired 26 shots indiscriminately while wearing the school's purple uniform.

Initial reports on the death toll varied, but authorities have since confirmed that three teachers and three students were killed. Nine of the 22 injured individuals are in critical condition. The shooter is also dead; it remains unclear whether he committed suicide or was killed by police.

This incident echoes previous tragedies in Thailand. In February, a 17-year-old student killed a school director and injured others in Hat Yai. In 2022, a former police officer killed 37 people, including 22 children, at a preschool in Nong Bua Lamphu. The Debsirin school is part of an educational network founded in 1885 by the royal family, with notable alumni including former King Ananda Mahidol.
