At least three killed and nine detained in counterterrorism operation in southern Iran

Iranian authorities said they dismantled three cells in Sistan and Baluchistan before the alleged militants could carry out “any act of sabotage or terrorist action.” At least three people were killed and nine detained in the operation, according to Iran’s Intelligence Ministry.

The ministry described the cells as “linked to the American-Zionist enemy.” It said they had received military training abroad, including instruction in making and placing explosives and carrying out killings. The ministry also said the groups possessed a considerable quantity of weapons and military ammunition.

The statement, carried by the Mizan news agency, did not say where the operation took place or identify the alleged terrorists’ organization. Local authorities separately reported that two Iranian security forces members had been killed in a vehicle carrying food and logistical equipment for members of the Basij militia, which is subordinate to the Revolutionary Guard.

The Revolutionary Guard announced a similar operation on Saturday in which two people were killed. It said the operation aimed to prevent “terrorist acts as part of the U.S. war” in the area.

Sistan and Baluchistan borders Pakistan and Afghanistan. The predominantly Sunni province is home to armed groups opposed to Tehran’s Shiite government, as well as smuggling and drug-trafficking networks. Jaish al-Adl, a Sunni group seeking independence for the region, operates there and is considered a terrorist organization by Iran. The authorities have also detained thousands of people since the start of the war with the United States and Israel on Feb. 28, accusing them of being spies and traitors while tightening security and pursuing opposition groups and January protesters.
