Athens Empties as Thousands Depart for Islands on August 15th

Athens has transformed into a ghost town on August 15th, with its streets deserted as a significant portion of its population departs for island getaways. The exodus has left the capital notably quiet, a stark contrast to its usual bustling urban landscape.

Ferry services experienced considerable disruption due to adverse weather. The port of Piraeus saw a large volume of passengers, with 21,893 travelers booked on scheduled routes. However, sailings to Syros, Tinos, and Mykonos by the "Blue Star Paros," and to Paros, Naxos, and Koufonisi by the "Super Speed Jet 4," were canceled. Similar weather-related restrictions were in place at the ports of Rafina and Lavrio, with sailing bans effective until 1 p.m.

Despite the weather challenges, some routes, like those to Marmari from Rafina, continued to operate.
