Athens Metro replaces 29.4 km of rails, completion set for September

The Athens Metro is nearing the completion of a major rail replacement project on Lines 2 and 3, with 29.4 kilometers of tracks already renewed. The project, which began in November 2025, is now at 98% completion and is expected to be fully finished in September, significantly ahead of its original February 2027 deadline.

This extensive upgrade, the largest to the lines' track infrastructure since the metro's inception, has focused on the most heavily used sections, including the routes between Sepolia-Dafni and Syntagma-Ethniki Amyna. The work involved 1,950 welds and ultrasonic tests to ensure the quality and durability of the new tracks, enhancing the reliability and quality of passenger travel.

The final phase of the project involves work on the Monastiraki-Kerameikos section, scheduled for September. STASY, the metro operator, is also awaiting approval for an additional contract to replace another 7.3 kilometers of rails.

With a total budget of 7.3 million euros, the project is part of a broader preventive maintenance and targeted upgrade program for the metro network. The initiative aims to maintain high standards of safety, reliability, and operational availability for Athens' public transportation system.
