Athens Metro Stations to Close Earlier Due to Maintenance

Athens commuters are facing significant disruptions as the metro system announces earlier closures for several stations on Line 2, the 'Red Line.' Starting Sunday, May 17th, the stations Sepolia, Attiki, Larissa Station, and Metaxourgeio will cease operations at 9:40 PM from Sunday through Thursday. This measure, implemented for essential maintenance works by STASY (Urban Rail Transport SA), will undoubtedly inconvenience many who rely on the metro for their evening travel.

The impact is particularly felt as Attiki Station, a key interchange, will only remain accessible for Line 1 (ISAP) services, forcing passengers to find alternative routes or modes of transport for Line 2 connections. Train services on Line 2 will be restricted to two separate segments: Anthoupoli to Agios Antonios, and Omonia to Elliniko. STASY acknowledges the disruption, stating in their announcement that these "traffic arrangements are necessary for the execution of these important works, which will contribute to the improvement of daily commutes."

To mitigate the impact, the Athens Urban Transport Organization (OASA) is introducing a temporary bus line, X19, to connect Omonia and Agios Antonios stations during the closure period. While this provides a partial solution, the added complexity and potential delays of transferring to a bus service will be a new challenge for passengers. The Greek public, accustomed to the efficiency of the metro, will need to adjust their routines significantly during this maintenance period.

From a local perspective, such infrastructure maintenance is vital for the long-term reliability of the metro system, which is a cornerstone of Athens' public transportation. However, the timing and communication of these changes are critical.
