Athlete Santosh Rai achieves success at Ironman Leeds

London-based runner Santosh Rai has achieved a significant milestone by qualifying for the prestigious Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii. Rai secured his spot by finishing second in his age group and 51st overall at the challenging Ironman Leeds competition held recently.

This qualification marks a historic moment, as Rai is the first Nepali and the first London bus driver to achieve this distinction. The Ironman World Championship is considered the ultimate goal for triathletes worldwide, with only about 3% of participants across all age groups managing to secure a spot each year. Qualification is extremely difficult, requiring either winning an age group outright or completing 12 Ironman races and participating continuously for two years to enter the selection 'ballot'.

Rai expressed immense pride in his accomplishment, stating, "The most important thing is that my first attempt to qualify for the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, has succeeded." He hopes his journey will serve as an inspiration, conveying the message that "anything is possible with dedication, hard work, and persistence."

His athletic career includes representing Nepal in the World Championship Long Distance Triathlon in 2024, where he finished in the top 13 in the elite category, and again in Spain last year, securing a top-17 finish in the 40-44 age group. Rai also founded Nepal Run UK and set a Guinness World Record by running the London Marathon in Nepal's traditional attire, the daura-suruwal.

Furthermore, Nepal Run UK has organized a "7 marathons in 7 provinces in 7 days" event in Nepal, which Rai has participated in twice. His consistent dedication to running, which began in 2009, has seen him become the first Nepali to complete six of the world's major marathons: London, Berlin, New York, Chicago, Boston, and Tokyo.
