Athletic Bilbao closely monitoring Nico Williams' fitness during World Cup

Athletic Bilbao is keeping a close watch on the physical well-being of their star winger, Nico Williams, as he participates in the World Cup with the Spanish national team. The club is working in "coordination" with the Spanish Federation's medical services to manage his recovery and overall fitness.

Mikel González, Athletic's director of Football, stated that the club is "very concerned" and "very much on top of Nico." Since Williams suffered a hamstring injury on May 10, he has been receiving "practically daily reports" on his progress. González emphasized the high level of coordination between Athletic's and the Federation's medical teams.

Williams will return to Athletic for further treatment after the World Cup, addressing not only his recent muscle issue but also a persistent pubic condition. González admitted that the club "made a mistake" by prioritizing Williams' availability over a more conservative treatment plan for his pubalgia, which had affected him until February.

Following a month-and-a-half break for treatment, Williams returned in early April and showed improved form, contributing goals and impacting games until his recent muscle injury. González noted that Williams has not had a full preseason in several years due to his demanding schedule with both Athletic and the national team. The club faces the challenge of helping the explosive player manage the physical toll of elite competition and return to his best form.
