Athletic Bilbao thrash Atletico Madrid 3-0 to hand them their first defeat of the season

Athletic Bilbao turned a balanced first half into a decisive victory after the break, defeating Atletico Madrid 3-0 at San Mames on Saturday night. The result gave Bilbao a second consecutive win and ended Atletico’s unbeaten start to the La Liga season.

Neither side found the net before halftime. Bilbao changed the game immediately after the restart, with Nico Williams opening the scoring just one minute into the second half. He headed the ball home from inside the penalty area to put the hosts ahead.

Atletico had little time to recover. Two minutes later, Robert Navarro doubled Bilbao’s lead against Diego Simeone’s team. The move began with a quick counterattack, as Inaki Williams found Navarro, who sent his shot into the bottom-left corner.

Atletico tried to reduce the deficit, but Los Colchoneros could not convert their efforts. Bilbao instead added a third goal in stoppage time through Oihan Sancet, completing a 3-0 victory.

Bilbao climbed to eighth place with six points. Atletico remained sixth with seven points from four matches, according to the La Liga website as cited by Antara.
