Athletics: Riku Illukka runs Finnish record in 200m and personal best in 100m

Finnish sprinter Riku Illukka delivered a stellar performance at the Oulu Challenger competition, clocking a new national record of 20.43 seconds in the 200-meter race. Although he finished second in the event, trailing Jamaica's Javari Thomas who ran 20.13, Illukka's time surpassed the previous Finnish record of 20.45 set by Samuel Purola four years ago.

Earlier in the evening, Illukka also showcased his speed in the 100-meter dash, securing a second-place finish with a personal best time of 10.22 seconds. He was narrowly beaten by Jamaica's Thomas, who won with a time of 10.21 seconds. The third-place finisher in the 100 meters was Jean-Christian Zirignon of Sweden with 10.31 seconds.

Illukka's 10.22-second 100-meter performance ranks as the third-fastest in Finnish history, with only the national record holder Samuli Samuelsson (10.12) and Tommi Hartonen having run faster.

Speaking after the competition, Illukka conveyed his elation. "A absolutely fantastic feeling, records in both distances and the national record, I am truly satisfied," he told Yle's broadcast. When asked if he had anticipated such results, Illukka responded affirmatively, indicating he had expected a strong showing.
