Atiku, Obi, others’ summit shifted to August 31

A planned summit for Nigeria's opposition political parties has been rescheduled from August 18 to August 31, 2026. Convened by the G-100 group, the meeting aims to foster a united front among opposition forces, including prominent figures like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Governor Peter Obi, to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the upcoming 2027 election.

The G-100 believes a fragmented opposition lacks the strength to defeat the incumbent. The decision to postpone follows consultations with six participating opposition parties and members of the House of Representatives minority caucus. Organizers stated that holding the summit after the National Peace Summit on August 18 would allow for more productive discussions and provide additional time to refine proposals.

There is a clear recognition across the different parties that this is an important moment for Nigeria’s democracy and that the opposition must begin to engage one another with greater purpose and structure.

Despite acknowledging existing differences among the parties, the G-100 reported that discussions have been candid, substantive, and encouraging. Participants recognize the critical juncture for Nigeria's democracy and express a willingness to listen, explore options, and find practical areas for cooperation. The group is optimistic that the rescheduled summit will yield significant outcomes, strengthening the opposition's potential to present a unified challenge.
