Parties to conduct primaries in new Delta, Kogi constituencies

Political parties in Nigeria are set to conduct primaries for four newly restored State House of Assembly constituencies in Delta and Kogi States. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled this period between August 21 and August 25, 2026, following a court judgment that reinstated these previously suppressed constituencies.

The affected constituencies are Abraka, Isoko North II, and Ughelli South II in Delta State, and Yagba West II in Kogi State. INEC's National Commissioner for Information and Voter Education, Mohammed Haruna, announced that these primaries will run concurrently with planned party primaries for bye-elections in other states. These include vacancies in the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency of Gombe State, the Disina and Sakwa State Constituencies of Bauchi State, the Udu State Constituency of Delta State, and the Dawakin Kudu State Constituency of Kano State.

INEC has emphasized that all other timelines and activities outlined in the revised timetable for the 2027 general election will apply to these newly restored constituencies. The commission has formally urged all political parties to submit the necessary notices for their various primaries to INEC well in advance of the designated dates. This move aims to ensure a smooth electoral process for both the restored constituencies and the bye-elections.
