Atletico Madrid in talks for Tottenham captain Romero

Atletico Madrid has entered discussions about signing Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero. The Argentine international, who committed to a new four-year contract with Spurs last August, is reportedly expected to depart the club this summer.

Inter Milan has also shown interest in the 28-year-old defender. Romero played in all seven of Argentina's matches during their recent World Cup campaign, which concluded with a loss to Spain in the final. However, Romero has been a long-term target for Atletico manager Diego Simeone, and the Spanish club is believed to be pursuing another attempt to acquire the center-back.

Tottenham is aware of Atletico's interest, and an agreement on personal terms for Romero is not anticipated to be an obstacle. Spurs manager Roberto de Zerbi has recently indicated that he would "respect the will" of players who wish to leave the club.

Romero experienced knee issues towards the end of the last season, during which Tottenham narrowly avoided relegation on the final day.
