Atlético Madrid signs World Cup winner Cristian Romero from Tottenham

Atlético Madrid has secured the signing of Argentine World Cup champion Cristian "Cuti" Romero from Tottenham Hotspur. The Spanish club announced the transfer on Saturday, with Romero agreeing to a contract that runs until June 30, 2031. Spanish sports media reports the deal is worth 40 million euros (46 million dollars).

Romero, 28, joins Atlético as their fourth signing of the summer, following Alejandro Grimaldo, Kang-in Lee, and Morten Hjulmand. The defender spent five seasons with the London club, amassing 156 appearances and often wearing the captain's armband. He was a key figure in Argentina's 2022 World Cup victory.

In his farewell message to Tottenham fans on Friday, Romero reflected on his time with the club. "The path was not perfect, but I don't want that to define my farewell. I choose to remember the happy moments, the lessons, the people who were by my side and, above all, the affection I received during these five years," he stated. His career also includes stints at Belgrano de Córdoba, Genoa, Juventus, and Atalanta.
