Attacks hit both Ukraine and Russia despite US visit, but not Moscow or Kyiv

The visit by US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner did not stop overnight attacks between Russia and Ukraine. The two envoys were expected in Kyiv after meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Saturday.

Ukraine and Russia had promised not to attack each other's capitals while the US mediators were visiting. But strikes continued elsewhere. Ukrainian emergency services said Russian attacks across several regions killed at least one person and wounded several others on Sunday.

In southeastern Zaporizhzhia, a Russian drone killed a 74-year-old man and wounded three people, local authorities said. Seven people were reportedly injured when a drone struck an apartment building in the western Khmelnytskyi region. Russian drones also hit a border crossing between Romania and Ukraine, prompting local authorities to close the border.

Russian authorities reported Ukrainian drone attacks in the Belgorod border region and Rostov region. In Belgorod, a man was killed and a woman seriously wounded when a drone struck a vehicle, according to local officials. A Ukrainian drone was also reported to have caused a fire at an oil refinery in Ryazan, southeast of Moscow. Those reports appeared in several Telegram channels but were not officially confirmed. Regional Governor Pavel Malkov reported an attack and a fire at an industrial facility without specifying its location.

Putin ordered a three-day pause in attacks on Kyiv beginning at midnight Sunday to allow the US envoys to visit. Hours before the order took effect on Saturday evening, three members of the same family were reportedly killed when a Russian drone struck the city of Chuhuiv in the Kharkiv region.
