Attempt to enter with corn and soybeans from Peru thwarted at airport

Argentine authorities have intercepted a passenger attempting to bring prohibited agricultural products into the country from Peru. The National Agrifood Health and Quality Service (Senasa) seized corn and soybean grains from the traveler's luggage at Córdoba International Airport.

The passenger had arrived from Lima, Peru, carrying the grains, which are restricted without proper authorization. Senasa officials stated that the seizure was a routine procedure to safeguard the nation's sanitary status. The confiscated grains were subsequently destroyed.

This action was taken in accordance with Resolution 295/1999, which outlines the conditions for importing food, animals, plants, and agricultural products into Argentina. Senasa emphasized that such measures are crucial for preventing the introduction of pests and diseases that could threaten the country's agricultural production.

Between January and June of this year, Senasa inspectors at Córdoba Airport examined the luggage of over 327,000 passengers arriving on international flights. During the first half of 2026, the agency confiscated more than 237 kilograms of prohibited agricultural and animal products at this airport alone. Senasa operates over 110 border control points across Argentina, including airports, land, river, and maritime crossings, to maintain phytosanitary security.
