Attempted Attack on Substation Near Major German Power Plant: Explosive-Filled Rockets Found

Several suspected homemade rockets packed with explosives were found near a substation close to the Jänschwalde power plant in southern Brandenburg, according to information reported by Germany’s Märkische Allgemeine Zeitung.

The incident took place at the Turnow/Preilack substation. The facility was reportedly struck several times, while emergency responders found multiple devices believed to have been fitted with explosives. Authorities reportedly disabled the devices. A photograph published by the newspaper showed one device with an unclear, probably improvised design.

Initial information suggested that the possible aim was to cause a major power outage at the nearby Jänschwalde thermal power plant. No such outage occurred, according to the information available at the time.

Transmission operator 50Hertz confirmed that unknown perpetrators had caused possible material damage to several lines in its network on Tuesday morning. The company said the lines suffered a “brief interruption,” but all had since returned to service. General electricity supplies were not considered at risk.

“50Hertz is working closely with the responsible security authorities to clarify the situation,” a company spokeswoman said. The operator also urged people across its network area to report suspicious individuals and incidents to police.

Official police details were not yet available when the report was published. Police in Cottbus said the Potsdam police department had taken over communication about the case, and the state interior ministry directed inquiries to the same department. LEAG, which operates the power plant, said none of its employees was injured. The investigation continues, and no suspect or motive has been officially identified.
