Attempted theft of metal from sunken Danube barges foiled

Authorities in Constanța, Romania, have launched a criminal investigation into an attempted theft of metal components from sunken barges in the Danube River. The incident occurred near the village of Izvoarele, where two individuals in a small boat were reported to be trying to remove parts from the submerged vessels.

Upon arrival, police found that the barges, which were intentionally sunk the previous week to manage the Danube's flow for the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant, showed no signs of missing components or cutting. The owner of the boat, a 46-year-old man, was located and taken in for questioning.

Investigators are continuing their work to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine if any criminal offenses occurred. The barges were sunk in a controlled operation over two days to divert water flow, an operation complicated by strong river currents.
