Attica beaches packed as temperatures soar past 40 degrees Celsius

Beaches across Attica saw a surge of visitors on Saturday as thousands sought refuge from the intense heat gripping Athens. Temperatures across Greece climbed significantly, with Trikala and Kalabaka registering the highest readings at 40.7 and 40.6 degrees Celsius, respectively. Many continental areas consistently stayed above 39 degrees.

In the Attica region, the heat became particularly noticeable by midday. Avlona recorded 38 degrees, Skala Attikis 37.2 degrees, while areas like Marousi and Aegina saw temperatures between 36 and 36.5 degrees Celsius. The National Observatory of Athens / meteo.gr forecasts a slight further increase in temperatures for Saturday and Sunday.

The heatwave is expected to continue in many parts of the country until the middle of next week. Maximum temperatures are predicted to reach 38 to 40 degrees Celsius, with the possibility of local areas hitting 41 to 42 degrees Celsius. Overnight minimum temperatures in urban centers are also expected to remain unusually high.

In Athens itself, clear skies prevail with winds from the north at 2 to 4 Beaufort. The temperature is expected to range from 26 to 36-38 degrees Celsius, potentially reaching up to 39 degrees locally. Thessaloniki anticipates partly cloudy skies with light winds and temperatures between 25 and 35 degrees Celsius. Other continental areas will see highs of 37 to 39 degrees, with Thessaly potentially reaching 40 degrees, and the Eastern Aegean islands experiencing highs of 36 to 38 degrees Celsius.
