August 2027 due date: Tierpark Hellabrunn expects offspring in elephant house

Munich's Hellabrunn Zoo is eagerly anticipating the arrival of a new Asian elephant calf, with the expected due date set for August 2027. The pregnant elephant, Temi, is carrying the herd's first new member since the tragic death of her calf, Otto, from a herpes virus in June 2025. This upcoming birth marks a hopeful new chapter for the zoo's elephant population.

The period following Otto's death was difficult for the remaining five elephants, requiring adjustments in their social dynamics. Zoo officials noted that while keepers have found ways to manage the herd, including temporary separation of females, the situation has recently improved. The zoo is hopeful that Temi's pregnancy will further contribute to a more harmonious environment within the enclosure.

Zoo director Rasem Baban expressed his delight at the news, stating, "After the challenges of the past year in the elephant group, we are very happy about this development." The calculated birth date, based on blood and urine samples, brings a sense of optimism to the zoo, which has been navigating the complexities of herd management.
