August holidaymakers return, port traffic peaks

The final wave of August holidaymakers is returning to Attica, bringing with them a surge in activity at the region's ports. The port of Piraeus, a major hub, saw particularly heavy traffic from early morning as travelers disembarked from island getaways and others boarded ferries for brief escapes.

Official figures highlight the scale of the movement. On the preceding day, Piraeus welcomed 24,031 passengers, while the Saronic Gulf routes saw 7,746 arrivals. Rafina reported 8,047 arrivals, and Lavrio received 2,917 passengers. The outbound traffic was also substantial, with Piraeus seeing 13,658 departures, the Saronic Gulf 9,833, Rafina 7,461, and Lavrio 3,491.

Projections for the current day indicated continued high numbers, with approximately 11,000 passengers expected to depart from Piraeus, alongside 5,314 from the Saronic Gulf, 4,025 from Rafina, and 1,373 from Lavrio. These figures underscore the significant volume of travel associated with the end of the popular August holiday season in Greece.
