Ingrid Bergman, a cinematic icon, was born in Stockholm to a German mother and a Swedish father. Her father, a photographer and artist, and her mother passed away when she was very young, leaving her to be raised by an elderly uncle.

Despite a naturally shy disposition, Bergman harbored an early ambition for acting. She gained initial experience in a 1932 Swedish film and subsequently enrolled in the Royal Dramatic Theatre School in Stockholm. By age 20, she made her debut in Swedish cinema, quickly rising to prominence.

Her breakthrough came with the 1936 film 'Intermezzo,' followed by 'The Count of Monte Cristo.' The Hollywood adaptation of 'Intermezzo' in 1939 marked her first foray into American cinema, achieving significant commercial success. However, it was her role as Ilsa Lund in the 1942 classic 'Casablanca' that cemented her status as a global star.

Following 'Casablanca,' Bergman's career flourished with acclaimed performances in 'For Whom the Bell Tolls,' earning her an Oscar nomination, and the film noir 'Gaslight,' which secured her first Academy Award. She continued to garner Oscar nominations for 'The Bells of St. Mary's' and 'Joan of Arc.' Her collaborations with Alfred Hitchcock in 'Spellbound' and 'Notorious' further showcased her versatility.

Bergman's career took a controversial turn in 1949 when she moved to Italy to film 'Stromboli' with director Roberto Rossellini. Their ensuing affair and the birth of their child before her divorce from her first husband, Petter Lind, caused a scandal.
