August Holmgren eliminated from US Open qualifying

Danish tennis player August Holmgren's journey at the US Open has concluded after a first-round qualifying loss to Italy's Andrea Guerrieri. The 28-year-old Holmgren, ranked 244th in the world, was defeated 3-6, 7-6, 2-6 in a match that lasted just over two hours.

Despite being considered a slight favorite, Holmgren struggled against the more consistent play of Guerrieri, who is ranked 187th. While Holmgren showed flashes of strong play, particularly with his first serve in the opening set, Guerrieri's stability and fewer errors proved decisive.

Holmgren managed to force a second-set tiebreak after being down a break, showcasing resilience. However, Guerrieri regained control in the third set, capitalizing on Holmgren's second-serve issues and a higher error count, ultimately securing the victory.

This defeat means Holmgren's appearance at Wimbledon earlier in 2025 remains his sole Grand Slam participation for the year. Meanwhile, fellow Dane Elmer Møller is also competing in the qualifying rounds, facing a tough challenge against Coleman Wong. Holger Rune has withdrawn from the US Open due to injury, while Clara Tauson is the only Dane confirmed in the main draw.
