Aulis Tenkanen, Engineer and Genealogist, Dies at 92

Aulis Tenkanen, a retired chief engineer and doctor of technology, passed away on June 2, 2026, in Helsinki after a brief illness. He was 92 years old.

Born in Pyhäjärvi, Viipuri Province, on May 20, 1934, Tenkanen's childhood was shaped by displacement. His family relocated multiple times, eventually settling in Tyrvä, where he graduated from high school in 1953. He then began his studies at the Helsinki University of Technology, graduating with a degree in surveying engineering in 1958. He furthered his expertise in urban planning and completed his doctorate in 1983.

During his studies, Tenkanen met Anneli Laine, a business student, whom he married in 1956. They had two sons, Arto and Ismo. His early career included roles in land surveying and urban planning, notably coordinating a regional planning project in Salo.

Tenkanen later separated from his first wife and entered into a long-term partnership with Pirkko Lukkarinen, a humanities graduate from Suonenjoki. They lived together for over fifty years in their Munkkiniemi home. In the 1970s, he moved to the National Land Survey of Finland, focusing on land consolidation and later serving as head of the research and development unit before retiring in 1995.

Beyond his primary career, Tenkanen was active in urban planning committees, served as an acting professor, and was the editor-in-chief of the Finnish Society of Surveying Engineering's scientific journals. He also represented Finnish surveyors in the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) and served as its correspondent. His passions included classical music, literature, tennis, and particularly genealogy, dedicating his retirement to researching the history of the Tenkanen-Tengén family and documenting his own work history through writings and websites.
