Australia-funded hospital project in Fiji still in planning stages

A significant infrastructure project backed by Australia aims to enhance Fiji's healthcare system over the next two decades. The initiative includes comprehensive improvements to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWMH) and the construction of a new hospital facility outside the current CWMH.

Assistant Minister for Health Penioni Ravunawa confirmed the project's timeline, describing it as a "long-term investment in Fiji's healthcare." He noted that the "whole project improvement plan for the hospital and also for the new hospital that the Minister is planning to build outside of CWM" will likely take "about 10 to 20 years to complete."

The planned improvements involve refurbishing the CWM Hospital's west wing, which is over a century old, while preserving its historic facade and name. This long-term vision is part of the Vuvale Partnership, a collaboration between the governments of Fiji and Australia, emphasizing international cooperation in strengthening health infrastructure.

In addition to the long-term plans, recent developments at CWMH have already brought tangible benefits. A partnership with the Church of Latter-day Saints of Jesus Christ provided over $800,000 for upgraded facilities. These include roof repairs, improvements to the maternity ward and wash facilities, a new operating theatre, and enhanced staff rest areas. The Assistant Minister acknowledged these urgent improvements are already easing pressure on both staff and patients, even as the ambitious long-term project is still in its planning stages.
