About FBC News
FBC News is operated by the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (FBC), which is a wholly government-owned entity. Its board of directors is appointed by the state shareholder, and it has historically been fully funded through the state budget via a public service broadcasting (PSB) fee subsidy. FBC operates both public service and commercial radio and television stations.
Under the previous administration, FBC and other media in Fiji operated under significant constraints that stifled press freedom. However, press freedom has substantially improved since December 2022 with the new government and the repeal of the restrictive Media Industry Development Act (MIDA) in April 2023. Journalists and media watchers have observed greater editorial autonomy at FBC in recent years, with no confirmed instances of direct governmental interference. Despite these improvements, no domestic legislation currently enshrines FBC's editorial independence or provides external oversight mechanisms. The outlet has faced accusations of biased reporting in the past and has also had to denounce doctored news pieces circulating online.
Reading context
Outlets in Fiji often work under tighter political or legal limits than in countries ranked as fully free for press. We keep each headline's original tone on purpose, so you can see how stories are usually framed for domestic readers.
