Australia identified as safest refuge in case of global apocalypse

In the grim scenario of a global apocalypse, Australia emerges as the most resilient location for human survival, according to a study analyzing various planetary catastrophe risks. Researchers from the University of Hagen examined the potential consequences of asteroid impacts, major volcanic eruptions, nuclear war, and pandemics.

The study suggests that wealthy, democratic nations with developed industries, agriculture, and geographical isolation, particularly island nations, are best positioned to withstand such events. Australia fits many of these criteria, boasting significant food production, mineral resources, industrial capacity, and ample space for adaptation. Its surrounding ocean also helps mitigate extreme temperature fluctuations.

However, the researchers caution that even Australia would not be entirely safe. Its isolation, while a potential advantage, could become a liability if global supply chains and fuel sources are disrupted. The study categorized global catastrophic risks into three groups: those reducing sunlight (like volcanic winter or asteroid impacts), major infrastructure disruptions (from geomagnetic storms or cyberattacks), and biological threats causing mass casualties.

Other countries identified as relatively resilient include New Zealand, Japan, Switzerland, and Argentina. Yet, each possesses unique vulnerabilities, ranging from tsunamis and volcanoes to dependence on international trade. The study acknowledges the unpredictability of certain threats, particularly those involving human behavior, while estimating the probability of others, such as a major volcanic eruption, to be around one in six this century. Ultimately, the conclusion remains somber: while Australia offers the best odds, survival is far from guaranteed.
