Australia news live: Karl Stefanovic to leave Nine immediately, network confirms

Karl Stefanovic has departed from his role as host of the Nine Network's 'Today' show with immediate effect, the network confirmed in a statement. This abrupt exit comes after days of controversy surrounding his use of an independent podcast series to interview British far-right activist Tommy Robinson.

Nine Entertainment and Stefanovic mutually agreed that it was no longer feasible for him to continue hosting 'Today' while also producing his independent podcast. Although an agreement was previously in place for Stefanovic to leave the show at the end of the year, both parties subsequently decided on an immediate departure.

In an internal email to staff, Nine's CEO Matt Stanton acknowledged the extensive media reporting on Stefanovic's future. He stated that after more than two decades, it was the right time for Stefanovic to move on from 'Today' and the Nine Network, recognizing it as a significant change for viewers and the company.
