Australia reports first mass seabird deaths from bird flu

Australia is on high alert after confirming its first mass death event involving seabirds infected with the H5N1 strain of bird flu. The outbreak was detected near Cape Jaffa, south of Adelaide, where authorities found 49 dead and 35 sick shearwaters.

The virus has been confirmed in samples taken from the birds found on the rocks during helicopter surveillance.

Australian Agriculture Minister Julie Collins confirmed the H5N1 virus in samples taken from the affected birds during aerial surveillance. The birds were discovered on July 31, approximately 250 kilometers southeast of Adelaide. Minister Collins stated that the virus's spread in the wild could make significant losses difficult to prevent.

This incident marks the first confirmed mass mortality event of its kind in the country, bringing the total number of confirmed H5N1 cases nationwide to 74. While the virus has been detected across a wide area, from Western Australia to Queensland, the majority of cases are in South Australia. Officials have found no evidence that the virus has reached poultry farms, though biosecurity measures have been intensified since the virus was first detected in June.
