Australia's Foreign Minister Travels to Philippines for ASEAN Meetings

Australia's Foreign Minister Penny Wong is set to visit the Philippines to attend key Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) ministerial meetings. The gatherings are expected to address the growing strategic competition and economic uncertainties within the region.

Wong will participate in the ASEAN-Australia meeting, the East Asia Summit (EAS), and the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF). These meetings provide a crucial platform for Wong to engage with counterparts from across the region and beyond. Her office stated that the visit aims to reinforce Australia's interests and collaborate on shared challenges, including energy security, supply chain resilience, and long-term economic prosperity.

In a time of increasing strategic competition and global economic uncertainty, it is more important than ever that Australia works closely with ASEAN partners to help shape a peaceful, stable, and prosperous region.

A significant focus of the discussions will be the ongoing crisis in Myanmar. This comes after ASEAN foreign ministers held their first in-person meeting with a representative of Myanmar's military regime since the 2021 coup. The bloc has consistently urged a cessation of violence, promotion of dialogue, and facilitation of humanitarian aid in line with its five-point consensus.

Australia and the Philippines are also commemorating the 80th anniversary of their diplomatic relations this year. Wong is scheduled to meet with Philippine Foreign Minister Theresa Lazaro, reaffirming Canberra's support for Manila's ASEAN presidency in 2026. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is also expected to attend the ministerial meetings, underscoring the United States' commitment to strengthening its partnerships in Southeast Asia.
