Australia's Jetstar to Charge for Overhead Carry-On Bags

Australian budget carrier Jetstar is introducing a new cabin baggage policy in February, requiring passengers to pay extra if they wish to store carry-on bags in overhead lockers. Under the revised rules, travelers are permitted one free bag that fits under the seat, such as a backpack or handbag. However, larger items intended for overhead storage will cost between A$25 and A$52 per flight, depending on the route. This change brings Jetstar's policy in line with many other low-cost airlines worldwide that charge for overhead space while including a smaller, under-seat bag in the base fare. Jetstar will also offer a "Priority Carry-on" option, which includes a larger bag and early boarding, removing the previous 7kg weight limit. Airline CEO Stephanie Tully stated the new model aims to improve on-time departures by simplifying the boarding process and optimizing the use of overhead locker space. She added that the policy reflects a "pay for what you need" philosophy, where traveling with less results in lower costs.
