Australia to cut annual refugee intake by one-third starting 2027

The Australian government, led by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, plans to lower the annual refugee intake by a third, to 13,750 people, beginning in 2027. This decision is part of a broader strategy to reduce net migration into the country.

The current humanitarian intake quota stands at 20,000 people annually, a figure that had been increased in recent years. The planned reduction, however, is separate from potential immigration tightening measures being considered by the Labor Cabinet, which are still under negotiation.

Government sources indicated to the Australian Financial Review that the decision to lower the refugee quota was also influenced by the strain on the nation's resettlement services. Since taking office in 2022, the Labor government had raised the humanitarian quota from 17,875 to 20,000 annually. This reduction means Australia will accept 6,250 fewer refugees each year compared to the current quota.

The move comes as the Albanese government grapples with pressure on its immigration system and seeks to lower net migration rates. The government has yet to finalize a comprehensive overhaul of its immigration policy, which is expected to be a significant issue in managing population numbers and public service demands.
