Australia Tops Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games with 70 Gold Medals

Australia dominated the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, finishing atop the final medal standings with an impressive 70 gold medals. They secured a total of 171 medals, including 45 silver and 56 bronze.

Team Nigeria concluded the games in seventh place, earning 10 gold, 7 silver, and 7 bronze medals. This performance was viewed positively by officials, especially considering Nigeria's participation in fewer sports compared to past games where they have historically excelled in disciplines like wrestling and table tennis.

Our athletes have done well here at Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. If you compare our performance here against past outing with more sports like wrestling, table tennis and many others where Team Nigeria have more strength, you will appreciate the medals that we won from few sports events.

Yusuf Alli, Chairman of Elite Athletes Development and Podium Board for Team Nigeria, praised the athletes' efforts. He noted that the medals won from a limited selection of sports were a "refreshing development." Alli also attributed the success to improved athlete welfare and preparation, including pre-competition camps and timely payment of bonuses and allowances, which he stated were unprecedented under the current National Sports Commission leadership.

The games saw 3,000 athletes from 74 nations compete across 10 sports, with 41 nations securing at least one medal. Notably, Nigeria's medal spread was evenly distributed between male and female athletes, a significant achievement marking a revival for the men's teams, led by Captain Chukwuebuka Enekwechi in the Men's Shot Put event.
