Australian footballer Cristian Volpato investigated after alleged positive cocaine test

Australian football player Cristian Volpato is facing an investigation after allegedly returning a positive roadside test for cocaine. The incident occurred following two separate instances of alleged speeding in Sydney.

New South Wales Police reported that the 22-year-old midfielder was first stopped on the Anzac Bridge late Thursday night. He was reportedly traveling between 86 km/h and 94 km/h in a 60 km/h zone. While a breath test at this stop was negative, police stopped him again approximately two hours later.

During the second stop, Volpato was allegedly traveling at 109 km/h in the same 60 km/h zone. It was at this point that he allegedly returned a positive roadside oral fluid test for cocaine. Authorities have issued Volpato an infringement notice for speeding and have suspended his international driver's license for six months, prohibiting him from driving in New South Wales.

A secondary oral fluid sample has been collected for laboratory analysis, and the investigation is ongoing. Volpato, who recently switched his international allegiance from Italy to represent Australia at the FIFA World Cup, currently plays for Italian Serie A club Sassuolo. Both Football Australia and Sassuolo have been contacted for comment.
