Jigawa State resolves 47-year border farmland dispute with Niger Republic

A decades-long international farmland dispute between border communities in Nigeria's Jigawa State and the Republic of Niger has finally been resolved, bringing an end to nearly 50 years of conflict. The dispute, which originated in 1979 between the Jobi community in Nigeria's Maigatari Local Government Area and the Kyalli community in Niger's Zinder Region, had repeatedly hampered agricultural activities, strained diplomatic ties, and led to loss of life.

The peaceful resolution was facilitated by the Jigawa State Government, in collaboration with the National Boundary Commission (NBC). Following joint investigative visits and extensive consultations with traditional rulers, security agencies, and community leaders from both nations, the Jigawa State Boundary Committee proposed a solution. The committee recommended that Jobi community members cease cultivating on Nigerien farmlands and that the Jigawa State Government provide alternative viable farmlands within Nigeria to the affected Jobi farmers.

Acting on these recommendations, Governor Umar Namadi approved the de-reservation and conversion of a portion of the Dan-Makama Forest Reserve for agricultural use. The State Ministry of Lands, Housing, Urban Development, and Regional Planning secured alternative plots. At a ceremony in Sule Tankarkar Local Government Area, Governor Namadi announced the allocation of over 100 farmland plots, directly resettling 74 primary beneficiaries and designating additional plots for 30 other community members. Governor Namadi expressed gratitude for the peaceful resolution, emphasizing the importance of peace and good neighborliness, noting the shared family ties, culture, religion, and history of coexistence between the communities.

The National Boundary Commission praised Jigawa State's proactive leadership in swiftly identifying and approving alternative land, demonstrating a strong commitment to protecting citizens' livelihoods and safeguarding regional stability. The commission urged residents to uphold the agreement, fostering continued peace and cooperation along the international border.
