Australian police drop charges against Bondi Beach attack hero Ahmed al Ahmed

Australian police have dropped assault charges against Ahmed al Ahmed, a man celebrated for his bravery during a mass terror shooting at a Hanukkah event in Sydney's Bondi Beach last year. Al Ahmed, a fruit seller, was widely hailed as a hero after viral footage captured him intervening in the December 14, 2025, antisemitic attack that resulted in 15 fatalities. During the incident, al Ahmed ducked between parked cars and then confronted one of the gunmen, managing to wrestle away a weapon in an effort to halt the violence.

Earlier this year, al Ahmed faced accusations of stalking and assaulting his father, charges he consistently denied. The court documents confirmed the withdrawal of both charges following a brief hearing on Wednesday. His lawyer, Mohamad Sakr, stated in June that the situation was a difficult family matter and that al Ahmed had never expected such circumstances. Sakr also emphasized the importance of upholding the presumption of innocence, asserting that al Ahmed's heroic status and integrity should be maintained.

Al Ahmed, who sustained gunshot wounds during the Bondi Beach attack, received international praise for his actions, including commendations from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. Meanwhile, the legal proceedings against the surviving terrorist involved in the attack are ongoing. A prosecutor indicated that the case against Naveed Akram, 25, who faces 78 charges, has already involved over 800 witness statements, with more evidence yet to be examined. The case was adjourned until October 28 for a progress update.
