Australian woman gives birth to twins who are not related, leading to unique legal case

A highly unusual pregnancy in Australia has resulted in a landmark legal case involving twins born from the same birth but who are not biologically related. The woman, who has remained anonymous, was acting as a surrogate for a couple unable to conceive.

In April 2025, an embryo was implanted via IVF. Weeks later, an ultrasound revealed she was pregnant with twins. Medically, a surprising twist emerged: one twin, a girl, was the biological daughter of the couple for whom she was a surrogate, while the other twin, a boy, was the biological son of the surrogate mother and her partner. This occurred because the surrogate mother had unprotected sex with her partner early in the pregnancy, leading to a simultaneous natural conception.
