Fishing ban sign at park pond was a mistake, residents can fish

Anglers in Beveren-Kruibeke-Zwijndrecht can continue to fish at the Pareinpark pond, despite a mistaken "no fishing" sign that appeared earlier this week. The sign caused confusion and concern among local fishermen who believed their access to the popular spot had been revoked.

However, municipal officials have clarified that the sign was placed in error and does not reflect current regulations. According to a municipal decision from 2023, fishing is permitted in a specific section of the pond. The exact circumstances of how the erroneous sign came to be posted remain unclear, with one official describing its appearance as mysterious.

"The prohibition sign should never have been there. We are investigating how the sign ended up there," said alderman Laura Staut (Wij, Samen Sterk). She assured that the incorrect sign would be removed promptly to restore clarity for the fishing community.

This clarification comes as local anglers have been seeking new fishing locations. The municipality noted that two fishing spots in Beveren were lost in recent years, prompting requests for new facilities. While no new ponds are currently planned, residents can also fish at locations such as Fort Liefkenshoek and Fort Kallo. The municipality encourages anglers to adhere to the designated fishing zones within the Pareinpark pond.
