Austria Demands Third-Country Asylum Processing Before EU Meeting

Austria is urging the European Union to implement asylum procedures in third countries beyond its borders, citing recent migration events as a catalyst. Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner stated that the EU's Asylum Pact offers the necessary legal framework for such external processing.

"The legal possibilities for this have been created with the EU Asylum Pact," Karner told the newspaper Welt, according to an advance report. "Words must now be followed by deeds." His comments were made in anticipation of a special meeting of EU interior ministers scheduled for Tuesday.

The push for third-country processing aims to prevent tragedies like those recently witnessed at the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, where numerous migrants died attempting to cross the border, and to avoid further deaths in the Mediterranean Sea.
