Austria Loses Season Opener 0-3 at WAC

Austria experienced a disappointing start to their new football Bundesliga season, falling 0-3 to WAC in an away match played in approximately 30-degree heat. This defeat marks a stark contrast to their prior success, having won three competitive matches leading up to the league opener.

The scoring began in the 18th minute when WAC's Giacomo Vrioni converted a penalty after a handball in the box. Despite a disallowed goal for WAC shortly after, the home side remained the more dangerous team. Vrioni had another chance saved by Austria's goalkeeper Samuel Sahin-Radlinger in the 32nd minute, while Austria's offensive efforts were largely ineffective, with Reinhold Ranftl's long shot being their only notable attempt.

Following halftime, WAC extended their lead. Aaron Schwarz scored in the 49th minute with a fortunate strike after a disorganized Austrian defense. Austria's coach made a triple substitution, bringing on Kelvin Boateng, who soon conceded another penalty with an "ungeschickte Attacke" (clumsy tackle) on Schwarz. Vrioni calmly converted the spot-kick in the 63rd minute to seal the victory.

In the final minutes, WAC comfortably managed their lead. Austria, despite enjoying longer periods of possession, struggled to create clear scoring opportunities, with Julian Hettwer's deflected shot hitting the crossbar in the 88th minute being their closest effort. WAC had a late chance to make it 4-0, but Phillip Verhounig was denied by Sahin-Radlinger.
