Austria's difficult path to European football glory

Austrian football clubs are embarking on a difficult journey through European competition qualifiers following a disastrous performance last season. With the domestic season yet to begin, teams like LASK, Sturm Graz, Salzburg, Austria Wien, and Rapid Wien face a grueling qualification process to secure a place in lucrative European league phases.

The dire results from the previous year have seen Austria's UEFA coefficient ranking plummet from the top 15 to 22nd place. This decline means automatic Champions League qualification is now an illusion, and even returning to the top 15, which would grant five European spots, appears out of reach. Last season, none of the three qualified Austrian representatives, Sturm Graz and Salzburg in the Europa League, and Rapid Wien in the Conference League, progressed to the knockout stages.

LASK, as the Austrian Cup winner, has the most straightforward path, starting its Champions League qualification campaign. Even a brief appearance in the CL qualifiers offers a significant financial reward, but the real prize lies in reaching the league phase, which guarantees substantial earnings. Should LASK fail in the CL qualifiers, they are assured a spot in the Europa League league phase.

For Sturm Graz, the path is considerably tougher. After a strong home win in the Europa League qualifiers, they could face a formidable opponent like Fenerbahce Istanbul. If they are eliminated, they will continue their European journey in the Europa League third qualifying round. Salzburg also faces a challenging route through the third qualifying round and playoffs for Europa League participation, with the Conference League serving as a fallback option if they are eliminated.
