Austria's PV subsidy reform prioritizes storage but faces funding challenges

Austria is revising its photovoltaic (PV) subsidy program, with a new focus on promoting energy storage systems rather than solely encouraging the installation of new solar panels. State Secretary Elisabeth Zehetner believes this shift is necessary to make the subsidies more effective and accessible.

Despite the intention to broaden access, the reform faces a significant hurdle: insufficient funds to meet the demand from a large number of interested parties. This mismatch between available resources and applicant numbers remains a key challenge for the program's success.

Zehetner's stance emphasizes the strategic importance of energy storage in the current energy landscape. While acknowledging the need for more PV panels, she argues that prioritizing storage solutions is a more sensible approach to achieving the program's goals. The current system, she suggests, is not adequately addressing the problem of limited funding for widespread adoption.
