Austrian author Monika Helfer dies after fall at 78

Monika Helfer, the acclaimed Austrian writer celebrated for her novel "Die Bagage," died unexpectedly on Sunday at the age of 78. Her publisher, Hanser-Verlag, announced her passing in a press release, stating she died following a fall.

Helfer was a prolific author, publishing novels, short stories, and children's books throughout her career. Her literary contributions were recognized with multiple accolades, including the prestigious Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art, First Class.

Her 2020 bestseller, "Die Bagage," brought her widespread recognition. In this novel, Helfer explored the complex history of her grandparents and their children, weaving a narrative that resonated deeply with a large readership.

In the past year, Helfer also released the story "Der Bücherfreund" (The Book Friend) and the poetry collection "Bitte schick mir eine Droge" (Please Send Me a Drug). Her death marks a significant loss to Austrian literature.
