Germany's Political Divide Over "From the River to the Sea" Slogan

The political debate surrounding the slogan "From the river to the sea" has become increasingly difficult in Germany, especially in the context of the Middle East conflict and heightened tensions since the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel.

Globally, discussions have focused on the Gaza war, its humanitarian consequences, accusations of genocide, and Israel's occupation of the West Bank, alongside its military actions in Lebanon and Iran. However, these discussions in Germany occur under the unique shadow of the nation's historical responsibility for the Holocaust and its deeply ingrained commitment to Israel's right to exist.

Former Chancellor Olaf Scholz, echoing his predecessor Angela Merkel, emphasized the concept of "Staatsräson" (reason of state), particularly concerning the defense of Israel's existence. His successor, Friedrich Merz, continues to adhere to this policy line. Simultaneously, Germany has witnessed a significant surge in antisemitic crimes in the aftermath of the October 7 attacks.
