Austrian Governor Criticizes Federal Government's "Constant Deal-Making"

Thomas Stelzer, the governor of Upper Austria, has sharply criticized the federal government, lamenting a perceived "constant deal-making" within the coalition that he believes slows down progress and benefits opposition parties.

Speaking to the Austria Press Agency, Stelzer expressed a desire for "more speed, less agitation" from the governing coalition of ÖVP, SPÖ, and Neos. He argued that the practice of each party demanding concessions for its specific voter base on every political decision, as seen in the drought relief package and the climate protection law, is counterproductive. "Just because you are three doesn't mean every political decision has to be a deal for everyone," Stelzer stated, criticizing the "constant deal-making."

Stelzer warned that this approach not only frustrates the public but also plays into the hands of the far-right FPÖ, which he said benefits from the government's internal squabbles. He believes the government's focus should be on solving important issues, including climate protection, but that the constant "tethering" of decisions hinders effective action.

Despite his criticisms, Stelzer conveyed relief that the drought aid package was ultimately approved and expressed hope for its swift distribution. He also voiced strong support for Chancellor Christian Stocker, calling him the "logical top candidate" for the 2029 national election, citing Stocker's demonstrated leadership qualities in difficult times.

Additionally, Stelzer addressed the ongoing negotiations over the university budget, demanding an end to the "unfair treatment of Upper Austria" regarding the funding of its medical faculty. He stated that the state has heavily contributed to the faculty's establishment and expects it to be treated like other federal universities from 2028 onwards, rather than through special funding arrangements.
