Austrian teachers' union head suggests equipping schools with laptops instead of individual students

Georg Stockinger, the new chairman of the AHS teachers' union, views the planned shift in the school device initiative as a positive development. Originally, over 600,000 children received their own laptops and tablets starting in the first grade under a cost-sharing model since 2020. However, due to budget cuts, the distribution of devices will be delayed until the second grade of middle school and lower secondary school (AHS-Unterstufe) starting in the 2027/28 school year.

Stockinger finds this delay pedagogically sound. He further proposes a more fundamental change: equipping schools directly with devices rather than distributing them to individual students. This approach could potentially streamline resource management and ensure equitable access within the school environment.
